Series: Central Files, 1921-1950 105 boxes (97.8 cubic feet) and 3 reels of microfilm (35 mm) : The Central Files are grouped in five sub-series: Correspondence; Department Files; Historical Files; Station Files; and Television Files. Within most of the sub-series, the primary arrangement is chronological by year. For the correspondence section, which contains the largest amount of materials, there are two special indexes. The Correspondents Index, in Appendix A, includes substantive references which are not listed in the contents list under the correspondent's own name. The Script Index, Appendix B, lists all scripts in the section, many of which were not aired or for which broadcast data could not be found.
Subseries: Correspondence, 1921-194288 boxes (86.0 cubic feet) and microfilm (35 mm) The general correspondence files consist of material selected from many offices at NBC's New York City headquarters. Integrated into the Central Files in 1942, the collection was weeded at some time prior to transfer to Wisconsin and was perhaps four times its present size. A great number of the files contain material from the program department, but there is also much from other departments such as sales, engineering, and press and publicity. Although the bulk of the records cover the period, 1931-1941, there are some files from as early as 1921 which document early broadcasting by AT&T and RCA. Correspondence and internal memoranda pre-dominate, but there are also newspaper and magazine clippings, reports, charts, blueprints, pamphlets, photographs, promotional material, contracts, scripts and transcripts, bulletins and newsletters, political campaign literature, and related material. For the most part, the original order has been retained. As a result the researcher should be prepared to look in more than one location for material on a particular topic. Arrangement of the general correspondence is chronological by year, then alphabetical by subject. The chief exception to this is the material from 1921 to 1931 which has been treated as a single unit. Within the alphabetical arrangement there are numerous folders of miscellaneous material filed after each letter. This material is frequently significant and sometimes related to files located elsewhere in the general correspondence. Because the general correspondence files are so extensive, it is not possible to elaborate on their contents. Rather, the researcher is urged to consult the contents list. It must be noted that the most prevalent file headings are for program titles, radio personalities, advertising agencies, and sponsors. Use of the files, then, requires knowledge not only of program title and performers, but also the advertising agency and/or sponsor associated with a particular program. Useful aids for obtaining more detailed information on a program are: Harrison B. Summers' A Thirty Year History of Programs Carried on National Radio Networks in the United States, 1926-1956, ; John Dunning's Tune in Yesterday: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Old Time Radio, 1925-1976, ; Cooperative Analysis of Broadcasting Reports; and C. E. Hooper Inc. Records. Among the many topics treated are the influence of advertising agencies and sponsors on commercial programs, governmental regulation, NBC's relations with foreign broadcasting organizations, the coverage of domestic and foreign events, competition with other networks, the development of educational and religious broadcasting, use of copyrighted music, relations with the press, suits against NBC, development of talent and programs, and problems with certain types of advertising. The files also document quite well NBC's response to the Depression and to the international events which led to the outbreak of World War II. Many executives and other NBC personnel are represented in the files. While there is perhaps more for John F. Royal, vice-president for programming during the 1930s, than for any other individual, there are significant materials for James Rowland Angell, Merlin H. Aylesworth, Fred Bate, Thomas Belviso, Bertha Brainard, Phillips Carlin, Doris Corwith, Milton Cross, Margaret Cuthbert, O. B. Hanson, George McClelland, Clarence Menser, Frank Mullen, Richard C. Patterson, Frank Russell, David Sarnoff, A. A. Schecter, Sidney Strotz, Lewis Titterton, Niles Trammell, Roy Witmer, and Mark Woods. The files also contain a great deal of correspondence from prominent individuals in the field of advertising and public relations, broadcasting, politics, journalism, and the arts. Appendix A: Correspondents Index, includes a list of prominent correspondents that are filed other than by their own name within the Correspondence subseries within the Central Files. The central correspondence files also contain over three hundred scripts for a great variety of programming, including a few broadcasts by CBS. Because many of the scripts are sample or audition scripts which were not broadcast or for which no evidence could substantiate broadcast, they have been listed in Appendix B: Script Index, which is divided by program genre. When available, information has been supplied on program title, episode, date, and related program details. The oversize materials with the central correspondence files are only available on microfilm.
