Physical Description: 6.8 cubic feet (16 archives boxes and 1 volume) and 48 photographs (1 folder)
Scope and Content Note: The Wisconsin State Federation of Labor Records contains correspondence, minutes of the Executive Board (1918-1943) and of various conferences and other related groups, organizers' reports (scattered years from 1940 to 1950), and various other records noted in the contents list. Early correspondence includes many letters to Wisconsin Congressmen and Senators urging them to support legislation beneficial to labor and to defeat unfavorable legislation. One letter, written by William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, to Herman Seide dated February 7, 1941, reveals the struggle between the AFL and CIO at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. There are papers which reveal the attitude of organized labor to World War II, some material on the efforts of the Federation to effect a closer cooperation between farmers and laborers (1939-1941), and some material on the Milwaukee Ice Cream Strike in 1934. Some materials relate to a 1936 incident in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, in which a law and order group allegedly ran a state labor official out of town, and to resultant discussion on whether to hold the state federation's convention there. Photograph portraits and group images show individuals connected to the organization, circa 1890-1950.
