International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen. Local 6: Records, 1901-1982

Biography/History

Local 6 of the Bricklayers, Masons, and Plasterers International Union was formed on January 26, 1974 as the result of the merger of six local unions in north-central Wisconsin: Locals 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, and 33. The reasons for the merger were improved communication between labor and management, unified bargaining, elimination of jurisdictional disputes between locals and trades, and the hiring of a full-time business agent to better serve the needs of the members.

Local 6 now includes members in Adams, Clark, Forest, Marathon, Menomonie, Oneida, Langlade, Lincoln, Portage, Price, Taylor, Vilas, Wood, and northern Shawano counties. Records in the collection do not provide precise organization dates for all of the locals concerned, but at least some of them date to shortly after the turn of the century.
