Wisconsin. Department of Natural Resources: Subject Files, 1967-1987 (bulk 1968-1984)

Scope and Content Note

The central file continued as the department's filing system until about the mid-1980s. Thus, with the exception of the separately filed minutes of the DNR Board (Series 812) and the DNR publications in the SHSW Library, the Central Files are the most important source for the history of the environmental movement in Wisconsin for the decades from 1967 to 1987. For that time period, very few additional record series have been transferred to the Archives by the department. For the late 1960s and early 1970s the files are particularly useful, as they contain a variety of documentation ranging from high level policy papers and correspondence, reports, internal staff memoranda, committee minutes, and original incoming citizens correspondence. Not only is information included from the Madison office, but there are also some documents pertaining to district and field office operations. Over the years, however, the nature and completeness of the papers declined so that by the late 1980s some sections of the file consist only of copies of outgoing correspondence. In addition, not all of the central files were transferred to the Historical Society. For example, few 9000 files were received by the Historical Society.
