Scope and Content Note: Planning files, 1950-1991, consisting of correspondence exchanged with federal and local officials, maps, and local government resolutions, all pertaining to a national project which revised the functional classification of urban and secondary highways in order to conform to news standards for federal highway aid. The alphabetical county files concern secondary roads; while the municipal files concern the boundaries of urbanized areas. In addition, there is a master file, 1950-1991, of petitions from local government officials informing the Department of Transportation of changes to their county trunk highway system. These petitions, which were approved by the head of Department of Transportation planning, are arranged by petition number, a list of which is also included. There is also a complete, but undated, inventory of all national, secondary, and urban highways in Wisconsin.
