Wisconsin. Banking Department: Scrip Reports and Related Papers, 1933-1935

Biography/History

In response to the cash shortages of the Great Depression, on March 17, 1933, Wisconsin became the first state to issue scrip. The legislature authorized the State to issue ten million dollars in scrip which could be used similar to cash. Each bank was allowed to borrow up to 5% of their assets in scrip; in exchange the State received a lien on bank assets.
