Scope and Content Note

The records of the Town of Stiles span the years 1860-1977. The majority of this series ends in 1962, with some correspondence, election records, and blueprints extending into the 1970s. The collection includes 10 series, containing 11 volumes, 46 folders of material, 2 sets of blueprints and 2 maps.

The records include proceedings of the town board, school records, highway records, and other miscellaneous records. All of these records were kept by the town clerk.

A great deal of information is included in the Town Clerk's Record, 1881-1958 (Oconto Series 8). Among other things, these records document proceedings of town and board meetings, registers of town and school officers and their terms of office, oaths of office, records of chattel mortgages, school district maps, and a register of orders drawn on the town treasurer, The town clerk's records also include an abundance of information having to do with school consolidation among their School Records, 1907-1962 (Oconto Series 13). Also of interest to anyone studying Oconto County is a Naturalization List, 1860-1936 (approx.) for the whole of Oconto County (Oconto Small Series 6). Included among the Maps and Blueprints, 1889-1974 (Oconto Series 15) is a plat map of the Stiles Cemetery. Among the many Miscellaneous Records of the Town Clerk, 1888-1977 (Oconto Series 14) are bounty certificates, liquor seller's licences and bonds, forest crop land records and miscellaneous land records.
