Scope and Content Note

The Farrington Daniels Jr. Papers, 1918-1998, primarily document his life through personal and professional correspondence, journals, and photographs. There is no medical research information, although a few pieces of correspondence do contain insight on his professional research topics. The material is arranged chronologically with the exception of the Professional and General Correspondence, which follows an alphabetical arrangement. A majority of the correspondence is original letters; however, some correspondence and military orders have been photocopied due to illegibility, stains, or deterioration.

The BIOGRAPHICAL AND PERSONAL NARRATIVES series contains general information about his early life in Madison, Wisconsin. This series contains his high school report cards, journals, correspondence during his attendance at and employment for Camp Manito-wish, and college career at the University of Wisconsin. A copy of Dr. Daniels' curriculum vitae and the register describing the Daniels Family Papers are included with this series. His military service is documented primarily through World War II transfer orders, certificates, and Korean War civilian employment papers. A section of this series focuses on his father, Farrington Daniels Sr., through letters and an article written by Farrington Daniels Jr.

The FAMILY CORRESPONDENCE series contains both incoming and outgoing letters from Dr. Daniels to his family members from 1940 to 1998 with the concentration of materials spanning the years 1940 to 1960. The contents of these letters are routine day-to-day personal and academic information and show a strong family solidarity. These letters are primarily addressed to his immediate family members: his wife, Alice; parents, Dr. Farrington Daniels and Olive “O” Bell Daniels; sisters, Mrs. Martin (Miriam) “Mino” Ludwig and Mrs. James (Florence) Drury; and brother and sister-in-law, Dorin and Kathryn “Toddy” Daniels. This series also contains letters from his Grandmother Daniels in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and aunts and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John Horton and Harriet Daniels Jr.

The COLLEGE AND MILITARY CORRESPONDENCE contains letters written during his academic and military careers. These letters are written primarily to friends with whom he retained communication from Madison and Harvard. These letters describe his day-to-day activities during his medical training at Harvard. This series does not contain a large amount of information on activities in which he participated during his military career or employment for the United States Army.

The PROFESSIONAL AND GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE series contains letters written to colleagues and family members after he gained his first teaching position at the University of Oregon; contents of these letters are both professional and personal in nature. This correspondence gives insight into his research specialty of dermatology, although the majority of these letters are of a personal and friendly nature.

The PHOTOGRAPHS AND DRAWINGS series is divided into three subseries: Prints, Negatives, and Drawings. The organization within each subseries is the same. The majority of the images are arranged by three family members, Franc Birchard Daniels (1849-1926), Farrington Daniels Sr. (1889-1972), and Farrington Daniels Jr. (1918- ). Spouses and children of these three men are grouped with their corresponding husband or father. Material related to Farrington Daniels Sr., a prominent chemistry professor and Dean of the Chemistry Department at the University of Wisconsin, includes images of family and family activities; family homes in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Madison, Wisconsin; family pets; and family reunions. The images related to Farrington Daniels Jr. document his educational pursuits, military career, family activities, family homes in the Nakoma neighborhood of Madison, family vacations, and time spent in and around Door County, Wisconsin, where the family had a cabin. There are also images of identified people whose relationship to the Daniels family is unclear as well as images of unidentified people and miscellaneous photographs. There are also several photographs of Door County made by Dan Turner. The drawings include Christmas cards and family travel scenes drawn by Olive Bell Daniels.

The FILMS AND VIDEORECORDINGS, 1926-1987, contains footage primarily taken by Farrington Daniels Jr., documenting family events in the Nakoma neighborhood, Madison, Wisconsin, and in Jacksonport, Door County, Wisconsin; the University of Wisconsin Arboretum; Chicago; Portland, Oregon; and New York City. Also included are a few films based on Daniels' research in the Army and footage of Korea and the Philippines (during the 1940s) during Daniels' military service.
