The records represent the wide variety of concerns relating to the 1972 Presidential campaign. Arranged in three series, Administration, Issues, and Campaign, the records include clippings, correspondence, news releases, position papers, lists of workers and potential supporters, and releases from the national headquarters to state and local offices.

The majority of the records are composed of clippings and position papers. The ADMINISTRATION files contain materials relating to the national parties and conventions and to the organization of the Wisconsin state and county McGovern campaigns. The ISSUES files focus on McGovern's position on such topics as defense, the economy, education, government and tax reform, the Vietnam War, Watergate, and women's rights.

The Candidate segment of the CAMPAIGN series includes clippings relating to each candidate's positions and activities. Although some information is present concerning the Republican Party's candidates, the most important file relating to that party is the one on the Watergate break-in found in the Issues series. Since the primary elections play such a large role in the selection of a party's Presidential candidate, the events surrounding and the results of every state primary are important to the candidacy of the aspirants. Under the heading Primaries is each candidate's position on the national and local issues involved in the individual primaries.
