The James S. Haney Papers are arranged in five series: general correspondence; Young Republicans; Republican Party; Governor Warren Knowles; and a subject file. The GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE file, 1965-1974, contains letters pertaining to most of Haney's political activities. The letters are filed chronologically. Other correspondence will be found throughout the collection under subject headings.

Papers dealing with the YOUNG REPUBLICANS (YR) consist of general documents of the National Young Republican (NYR) Syndicate, 1965-1967; national (1967), regional (1966-1967), and state (1965-1967) YR conventions; and YR activities and programs such as leadership seminars and University of Wisconsin volunteer recruitment. Also included are copies of the Capitol Report, 1966-1968, and the Wisconsin Young Republicans, 1965-1968, pamphlets published by the Young Republicans. YR newsletters are filed with News-letters in the Subject File.

The REPUBLICAN PARTY (GOP) segment pertains to party activities on the national, state, and county levels. Materials relating to the national organization consist of items from the 1972 convention. Under the Wisconsin section of this series are found convention materials from 1964, 1966, 1973, and 1974, as well as some miscellaneous papers. The Dane County file includes caucus reports, 1974; executive committee minutes, March-June 1973; letters, bills, and menus from Lincoln Day fundraising dinners, 1972, 1974; and youth recruitment committee notes. Filed here, also, are papers dealing with party reform, 1973-1974, and miscellaneous campaign materials, 1966-1974. Other miscellaneous pieces are filed under each subject heading.

Papers dealing with GOVERNOR WARREN KNOWLES were collected by Haney during the period Haney was a part-time aide in Knowles office. They consist of a biographical file, 1965-1966; copies of the bulletin, “The Governor Reports,” December 1965-September 1966; form letters used in the governor's office; and a few copies of Knowles campaign materials, correspondence by Knowles' executive secretary, Paul Hassett, speeches and statements by Governor Knowles, items relating to the 1968 Governors' Conference, press releases, and miscellany. All of these items date between 1965 and 1970.

The SUBJECT FILE contains papers, 1962-1964, on the candidate committee of the Dane County Republican Club; the re-election of Mayor William Dyke committee, 1973; the Wisconsin GOP convention debating the issue of forced endorsement of party candidates in the primary election, January 1974; and the proposed visit to Wisconsin of Colorado Governor John A. Love in 1973. Also included are newsletters; press releases; correspondence and reports from the Student-Faculty Committee on Selective Service, 1966; materials on a fundraising dinner at which Congressman William A. Steiger was speaker in 1973; papers relating to the University of Wisconsin Student Association, Student Rights Party, 1965; and miscellany.
