(22 archives boxes) Scope and Content Note Although Donald Francke was an American pharmacist, the major part of this collection consists of correspondence and papers relating to international pharmacy affairs. The emphasis is on conferences and study missions that included American pharmacists. Francke's correspondence reflects his concern about international standards for drug nomenclature, formularies, and professional standards. The DOMESTIC series of the collection is fragmentary, but it emphasizes Francke's work for the Bulletin of Hospital Pharmacy (later the American Journal of Hospital Pharmacy), the International Pharmacy Abstracts, and several national and regional scientific and pharmaceutical meetings. Letters from many students and from George Urdang, the renowned historian of pharmacy, are included in this section. There are few personal letters in the collection, but the domestic series does include letters to friends and former students that discuss some family affairs. The INTERNATIONAL-GENERAL series includes many details of international pharmaceutical conferences and study missions. The Japan Study Mission of 1948 is especially interesting, for it has many Japanese and American reports and letters concerning the state of pharmacy in occupied Japan. Many of the letters and reports in the international sections are written in French. A few papers are in German, and some of the Japanese reports are written in Japanese. Many of the incoming letters are attached to copies of Francke's replies. The INTERNATIONAL-FIP (Federation Internationale Pharmaceutique) series encompasses correspondence, reports, and manuscripts from almost all of the FIP council and general meetings held since 1953. This series also includes subject correspondence with several prominent British and American pharmacists.
