Nicholas Allan Fischer Papers, 1964-1965

Scope and Content Note

As an undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1964-1965, Fischer helped organize residents of his dormitory to financially support several volunteer civil rights workers in Mississippi. The collection includes copies of correspondence between the students and the volunteers, as well as records of funds collected. The following summer Fischer worked for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in Sharkey County, Mississippi. There he assisted in building the rudiments of a precinct organization; continued voter registration efforts; and helped promote school desegregation, begin a Freedom School, and a Freedom Library. His letters and writings reveal additional information about his activities. Other material consists of general printed flyers and leaflets, and Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party papers, some of which pertain to the areas where Fischer worked.
