Scope and Content Note

Papers of a labor analyst, mediator, editor, and writer. The bulk of the collection deals with Pitzele's career as labor advisor and speechwriter for Thomas E. Dewey, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and James P. Mitchell and his work as a member of the New York Board of Mediation, the ACLU, and other organizations. There is also good representation of his positions as labor and economic editor (1940-1955) and senior editor (1955-1957) of Business Week; as weekly publications director of Retirement Advisors Inc.; and as writer of the “Jason Scott Letter,” a weekly advisory service to corporation executives.

This material includes correspondence relating to his work for Business Week which touches on labor news, articles, editorial policy, and personnel matters. There are also drafts of book reviews and final copies of articles for Business Week, The New Leader, The Saturday Evening Post, and The Reporter. The register provides a partial index to Pitzele’s many prominent correspondents such as William F. Buckley Jr., Clifford P. Case, Wilbur Cohen, Paul H. Douglas, Nathan Feinsinger, James C. Hagerty, Christian Herter, Clark Kerr, and Henry Cabot Lodge Jr.

Photographs document Pitzele's personal and professional life. Included are portraits of Pitzele, his family, and images of his office, Pitzele with various associates, and at labor union activities.
