Hugh M. Jones Papers, 1943-1946

Biography/History

Hugh M. Jones was born on October 9, 1892. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture with a B.S. in 1915, and worked in various capacities such as automobile dealer, county agricultural agent, assistant instructor at the University of Wisconsin, and alderman. Jones became director of the Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Department in 1939, and commissioner of the same department in 1941. In 1943, he entered the Civil Affairs Training School at the University of Wisconsin as an officer in the United States Army. Major Jones served as military governor of Aachen in Occupied Germany during 1945-1946. Following his return to civilian life, Jones was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate from the 29th senatorial district of Wisconsin in 1954 and again in 1956.
