Part 2 (Mss 343, Audio 1230A): 1990 Additions, 1975-1989
Physical Description: 5.2 c.f. (13 archives boxes) and 15 tape recordings
Scope and Content Note

The majority of the documentation in this addition dates from 1979 to 1985. Overall, this addition documents Adams' continued work as a writer and consultant and his increasing focus on worker cooperatives and worker education. The types of material here are similar to the earlier portion of the collection, except, since he did not work for a newspaper during the time covered by this addition, there are no newspaper articles. Part 2 is organized into three series: GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE, SUBJECT FILE, and WRITINGS.

The GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE is arranged chronologically and documents the genesis of many of Adams' projects and his working contacts. The information in this series is mostly professional. In his letters Adams includes personal details only to explain the progress of his work. His correspondents include writers, adult educators, and editors such as Michael Clark, director of the Highlander Center, 1974-1980; Bob Hall, editor of Southern Exposure; and John Ohlinger of Basic Choices, a Madison, Wisconsin adult education organization. Other prominent correspondents include Adams' co-authors, including Ann Giles Benson, Gary Hansen, and Rick Carlisle. Here also is Adams' correspondence with publishers and with James Dombrowski while trying to publish his biography.

The SUBJECT FILE is arranged alphabetically by topic and contains documentation on Adams' major projects and the people and organizations with which he worked, and the files include conference agendas, meeting minutes, reports, and grant proposals. (Note: The WRITINGS included in the SUBJECT FILE in Part 1 have been filed as a separate series in Part 2.) Individual files within the subject files generally document projects that Adams was involved with for two to four years. The exceptions are files Adams kept on organizations such as the American Friends Service Committee and Twin Streams Educational Center which span longer periods. The subject files contain much correspondence filed by name and topic. Also included are tape-recorded research interviews for Adams' biography of Dombrowski and his Goddard College book. Additional material on Dombrowski collected by Adams while researching the biography can be found in the Frank Adams portion of the James Dombrowski Papers (Mss 566).

The WRITINGS series is arranged alphabetically and includes drafts and published versions of articles, reports, and two books: To Know for Real and Putting Democracy to Work. Publications in which Adams' work appeared include In These Times, Friends' Journal, and North Carolina Insight. A short article about James Dombrowski is included here, but the full-length manuscript biography is not present.
