The bulk of this collection was received by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin from
Highlander in April 1971. Most of the tape recordings arrived in 1972 and most of the
photographs in 1973. Major additions were received in 1977. Subsequent additions arrived
between 1983 and 2010. See Acquisition Information for more details. The files from the Folk
School years traveled from Monteagle to storage in Myles Horton's home in Knoxville and from
there to New Market, before coming to Wisconsin. Portions of the files from the early
Knoxville period were stolen in an office break-in while in Knoxville.
A significant portion of these Papers was loaned by Highlander to the Tennessee State
Library and Archives, Nashville, for organizing and copying about 1967. At the State
Historical Society of Wisconsin, this portion has been re-organized and integrated with the
other papers in this collection. It came primarily from the materials now in the
Administrative File, the Subject File, and the Publications series. In almost all cases, the
materials Tennessee had copied were only part of the materials on any topic. For instance,
some materials from a specific workshop had been loaned to Tennessee and others had not; in
some cases, one page of a letter had been loaned and a second page had not. This was
undoubtedly because what now constitutes the Subject File was in great disarray as stored at
Highlander and received at Wisconsin.
