Congress of Racial Equality. Berkeley Chapter: Records, 1953-1967

Scope and Content Note

This collection comprises eleven folders which present a fragmented picture of the activities of Berkeley CORE. These folders were originally scattered throughout the papers of CORE's Western Regional Office.

The Berkeley CORE collection, 1953-1967, includes general correspondence; subject files on education, employment, and housing for blacks in the San Francisco Bay Area; membership lists; publications; and miscellany. The housing file forms the bulk of the collection, and contains research material, reports, case files concerning closed housing practices in Berkeley, and about 20 surveys of costs and landlord services in West Berkeley residences. The membership lists often bear heavy annotations concerning dues-paying and participation in activities. Among the publications are one copy of the Fall, 1965 CORE-lator and an incomplete run of campus newsletters, 1964-1967. The miscellany file includes reminiscence of a car journey through the South, pamphlets, and programs.
