Congress of Racial Equality. Berkeley Chapter: Records, 1953-1967

Biography/History

There were two CORE chapters operating on the Berkeley campus of the University of California in the 1960's, the faculty-oriented Berkeley CORE and the more militant, student-oriented Campus CORE. Berkeley CORE, judging from its records, was most active in pressing for the enforcement of open housing regulations; for which it conducted surveys, negotiations, demonstrations, and even lawsuits. Its activity was much more sporadic on behalf of increased integration in the Berkeley public schools and for equal employment opportunities. The chapter's chairman was Professor Charles Sellers of the History Department of UC-Berkeley.
