United States Pharmacopeial Convention Records, 1819-2005 (bulk 1900-2005)

Scope and Content Note

In the records of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention are correspondence, minutes, proceedings, and financial records relating to revision of the Pharmacopeia and the annual conventions. Administrative materials, such as financial records, are fragmentary, but convention proceedings (1900-1975) are particularly complete. The collection contains extensive correspondence between members of the Committee of Revision concerning pharmaceuticals. Well-documented subcommittees are organic chemistry (1930-1955), tests and standards (1947-1967), sterile products (1940-1969), the vitamin advisory board (specifically Vitamin B12) (1947-1959), and the subcommittee on scope and its various advisory panels (1947-1970). Numerous subject files (1930-1970) contain reports, memoranda and correspondence concerning pharmaceuticals under consideration for admission to the United States Pharmacopeia. The collection also contains materials (1961-1974) from the Drug Standards Laboratory and the National Formulary prior to their incorporation into the USPC. The Drug Standards Laboratory materials contain valuable provisional monographs (1963-1967) on drugs tested by DSL. The National Formulary materials chronicle the procedures for admission into the National Formulary and contain correspondence relating to pharmaceuticals under consideration.
