National Association of Women in Construction, Milwaukee Chapter: Records, 1955-1980

Scope and Content Note

The records of MIL-WIC have been arranged by administrative function; they consist of by-laws, minutes, committee files, national convention files, correspondence, newsletters, and miscellaneous records.

By-laws consist of the articles of incorporation and information on the chartering of the Milwaukee chapter, standard by-laws applicable to all affiliated chapters, regional by-laws, a charter, articles of incorporation, and by-laws at the national level, and local chartering notices.

Minutes of executive board and regular membership meetings include monthly treasurer's reports. They document routine matters and contain notations on committee reports and monthly speakers. The minutes are quite complete, 1965-1977, and include minutes of the chapter organizational meetings.

Committee files, 1966-1980, make up a major portion of the collection and are arranged alphabetically within this category. Many of the activities and functions on the local, regional, and national level were carried out through committee work. Some committees were added or terminated according to the needs and concerns of the chapter. The most well represented committee files are those of the construction projects, the fall planning conferences, regional forums, membership, professional education, programs, publicity, and spring seminars. Smaller files contain important material relating to education, service, and philanthropic activities.

National convention files appear complete for the years represented, 1966-1972, 1977, and generally include minutes from the annual meetings and nomination circulars for national elections.

The newsletter files contain publications issued by the national, regional, and Milwaukee chapter. Local newsletters are concentrated in the early and later years of the chapter, 1968-1970 and 1975-1980. The national newsletter, Image is poorly represented, while the regional and local publications are well represented in the years 1977-1980. Much of the information in the local newsletter duplicated information found in national press releases, the monthly minutes, or under the publicity heading in the committee files.

Miscellaneous records include a small file of general correspondence largely involving exchanges of information on procedural matters, thank-you letters, details of planning for regular meetings and programs, and similar routine matters; material relating to the installation of officers; official proclamations; treasurer's files on jewelry and gift items from the national office; national reports and publications; and an undated questionnaire rating MIL-WIC meetings.
