International Union of Operating Engineers. Local 311: Records, 1906-1967

Scope and Content Note

The Records of the IUOE, Local 311 relate to the operation and organization of the Local, and include organizational records, correspondence, reports, and financial records. Most of the Collection is correspondence with industrial organizations which employ Union members. Included among these are A. O. Smith; Armour and Company; Koehring Company; J. Laskin and Sons Corporation; various laundries; Layton Park Dairy Company, and others. The records also include correspondence with union officers, the central organization, the Wisconsin Federation of Labor, other locals, and governmental agencies. The correspondence concerns such matters as contract negotiations, strike information, cases before the National Labor Relations Board and the Wage Stabilization Board, transcripts of hearings and decisions by governmental agencies, proposed amendments to labor agreements, and delinquent members.

Also present are reports and correspondence with the general president, William E. Maloney; and the general secretary-treasurers, Frank A. Fitzgerald, Charles B. Grambling, and Joseph J. Delaney.

The records came to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in three separate accessions from 1953-1972. The original accession (1953) was organized as Part 1 of the collection, dates 1906-1951, and comprises Box 1-8. The papers received in 1965 and 1972 begin with box 9, date 1929-1967, and constitute Part 2. Because there are two separate alphabetical listings, it is necessary to check both parts of the collection for any given name, subject, or industrial organization. The order of each part is different and for each part, the order is rather confusing. The user is cautioned to examine the entire container list for complete information.
