Marinette and Menominee Hospital Records, 1883-1953

Scope and Content Note

The records in this collection primarily document patients treated between 1883 and 1908, and examinations given veterans who sought disability pensions from the federal government, 1893-1897 and 1903-1913. One patient record book from the Wisconsin and Michigan Hospital indicates each patient's name, address, date of admission and discharge, nature of injury or disease, and remarks. Two similar volumes for the Menominee River hospital also note where employed, ticket number, country of birth, and time sick prior to admission.

The pension examination books note name and address, company and regiment of military service, age, pension claim number, complaint and origin of disabilities, and summary of the examination's findings. The second volume (1903-1913) also records birthplace, occupation, complexion, color of eyes and hair, and scars. (The first volume, 1893-1897, has been retained in its original paper form due to its artifactual value.)

Also in the collection are several miscellaneous unbound items. They include an 1896 photograph of the Menominee River Hospital; a hospital ticket for admission, treatment, and board, 1908; a letter and 3 certificates re federal pensions, 1913; clippings on the 50th anniversary of the hospital, 1933; three items copied by Fred Burke of Marinette concerning the hospital's ticket plan and its demolition in 1949; and undated notes on medical lectures given at the hospital.
