Biography/History

Galena, Illinois, located in the northwest corner of the state, was the first population center of the Illinois-Wisconsin lead mining region. Originally known as La Pointe, the city was laid out in 1826 and incorporated in 1835. Situated on the Galena River which empties into the Mississippi, it was a major port for mineral shipments in the 1840s and 1850s.
