Joan Trumpauer Mulholland Papers, 1960-1966

Scope and Content Note

The collection primarily consists of newspaper clippings regarding sit-in demonstrations and other protest and civil rights activities, which were collected by Mulholland. All but a few of the clippings were mounted on pages and labeled by Mulholland, and were then subdivided alphabetically by city or town name, where appropriate, and filed in chronological order thereunder. Each scrapbook contains clippings pertaining to one or more Southern city, state, or person; these divisions of the material which were determined by the compiler, have been maintained. Unfortunately, the clippings were pasted onto printed sheets, and what apparently were grade-school homework and test papers of Mulholland, and the presence of this extraneous material makes the film somewhat difficult to read.

In addition to clippings regarding Southern states and cities where there were protests and demonstrations (for example, Birmingham and Selma, Alabama, and Cambridge, Maryland), there are also scrapbooks concerning other subjects. These topics include the Freedom Riders; Byron de la Beckwith, the accused murderer of Medgar Evers; and James Meredith. The miscellaneous papers mainly consist of a few printed news releases, bulletins, and reports issued by civil rights and other groups. Of particular interest may be the report of the April 13-14, 1962 Birmingham conference of the Southern Conference Educational Fund, and the issues of Mixissippi News, the in-house newsletter of the Mississippi Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. There are also a few personal letters written to Mulholland.
