Scripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance Staff Articles, 1949-1967

Scope and Content Note

This Scripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance Staff Articles microfilm collection is a morgue of mimeographed feature articles and editorials by SHNA staff writers and others, 1949-1967, together with several types of internal communications transmitted to the editors of the chain.

Basic arrangement of the collection is by year, with the primary subdivisions repeated in the same order each year. The order is substantially that which existed in SHNA's Washington, D.C. office. Most years begin with a file of “skeds” or schedules, which are chronologically-arranged daily synopses of each writer's assignment. Then follow by-lined articles and editorials, which form the bulk of the collection. These articles are arranged alphabetically by staff writer and chronologically thereunder. After the individual staff writers are miscellaneous writers, a category comprised of articles by guest columnists, SHNA writers who contributed only a few articles in a particular year, and Scripps-Howard chain employees who were not SHNA staff writers. The material for each year is concluded by a file of editorial communications. An index of all authors is in Appendix I which follows the reel list below.

Among the most prominent SHNA writers represented are Albert M. Colegrove, Max B. Cook, Robert Crater, Ludwell Denny, Charles Egger, Ruth Finney, Frank R. Ford, Daniel Kidney, Ted Knap, John W. Love, James G. Lucas, Charles Lucey, Marshall McNeil, Neil McNeil, Fred W. Perkins, Ernest T. Pyle, Dickson Preston, Earl Richert, Robert Ruark, Oland Russell, Roland H. Shackford, William Phillip Simms, Douglas Smith, Fred Sparks, Richard Starnes, Walter Stone, Roger Stuart, Edward Tomlinson, John Troan, Andrew Tully, and Frederick Woltman.
