Harold L. Michael “Joe Must Go” Papers, 1954

Scope and Content Note

In 1954 Harold Michael, then a resident of Amery, Wisconsin, and temporary chairman of the Polk County Republican organization, joined with Leroy Gore of Sauk City in urging circulation of petitions for the recall of Senator Joseph McCarthy. The correspondence consists mainly of letters from the general public in response to publicity regarding the “Joe Must Go” movement. They are divided into two groups, according to whether they are “anti-McCarthyrdquo; or “pro-McCarthy.” The former group does include one brief note from Edward R. Murrow, and several letters from Ivan Nestingen. Following the correspondence on the film are miscellaneous publicity and organizational materials of the recall movement, and clippings. The collection is available on microfilm only.
