Charles M. Sherrod Papers, 1964-1967

Biography/History

Charles M. Sherrod is a Negro minister dedicated to the Civil Rights Movement in the South. According to his papers, he appears to have been active in the southwestern area of Georgia, from about 1964 to 1967.

Sherrod grew up in the slums of Petersburg, Virginia. He was the oldest child in a fatherless family of six. While attending Virginia Union University he had to work to support himself as well as help support his entire family (who were on welfare at the time). He attended Union Theological Seminary in New York on scholarship as a candidate for the Doctorate in Christian Ethics on Religion and Society.
