WMCA (Radio Station: New York, N.Y.) Records, 1939-1964

Scope and Content Note

The collection, 1939-1964, is arranged into six series:

BACKGROUND consists of research reports, obituaries of station owner Nathan Straus, and station histories with program summaries, photographs, et cetera.

CORRESPONDENCE contains incoming and outgoing letters of station personnel, including sales manager John J. McSweeney. Topics include copyright, advertising, job applications, and personal matters.

RADIO SHOWS includes scripts, correspondence, clippings, publicity, and photographs. Of particular note are The Barry Gray Show, a late night talk program, and New World A' Coming, a series of dramatizations which provided a sympathetic look at issues facing African Americans in the United States, based on journalist Roi Ottley's book of the same name.

The SUBJECT FILE contains background for shows, correspondence, clippings, pamphlets, and photographs. The substantial political segment concerns political parties and other groups, most of whom had submitted paid announcements to the station before elections.

The AWARDS series includes files on the submission of programs for competition, as well as awards received by the station. The applications often involved a detailed analysis of the goals, programs, and progress of the station at the time.

The ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS, 1945-1959, have a small amount of employee files, overtime and commercial statements, and production sheets.
