Scope and Content Note

After graduating from Columbia University in 1933, Kihss worked for The Associated Press, The Washington Post, The New York World-Telegram, The New York Herald Tribune and, finally, for thirty years, the New York Times. His papers include virtually all of his journalistic output in the form of articles and news dispatches. Included are compiled newspaper and magazine articles Kihss wrote, drafts, memos and correspondence, 1933-1983, arranged chronologically for the most part. Up until the 1960s, the correspondence is predominantly work-related, after this date the files include his general correspondence, as well. The collection also includes background files for topics Kihss reported on throughout his career, such as the urban development of New York City, nuclear weapons, Latvia, Puerto Rico's relations with the United States and the Chinese, Cuban and Haitian revolutions and materials related to Kihss's community and professional interests, such as brochures, newsletters and correspondence regarding the New York Newspaper Guild, Columbia's School of Journalism's Alumni Association and the manuscripts of histories he wrote of both the New York City Youth Board and his church, Christ Evangelical Lutheran. Photographs are of friends and family members.
