Harold B. McCarty Papers, 1922-1986

Scope and Content Note

The materials in the collection are unorganized and related types of files are located throughout the collection in multiple boxes. Included are correspondence, reports, press materials, budgets, radio scripts, listener letters, newsletters and program notes, organizational material for WHA-TV, State Radio Council (SRC) meeting minutes and reports, National Association for Educational Broadcasters (NAEB) newsletters and reports, program schedules for various educational stations, and personnel and office files. Researchers will need to consult the list carefully to find all related materials on a given topic or for a given year.

Folders titled “office files” belong to McCarty and contain primarily station correspondence, but also include pamphlets, newsletters, clippings, office memos, program scripts, and other papers related to educational radio and broadcasting in general. These files were kept together mostly by year, but were largely unfiled. As a result, materials for any given year can be found in many boxes.

Other files include listener mail usually filed by year and sometimes by program; program scripts, program guides, and program schedules; budget materials for the State Radio Council (SRC) and for WHA; historical files created for interviews and anniversaries; WHA public relations materials and newsletters; personnel files containing information on salaries and job descriptions; speeches and writings by McCarty; some personal correspondence of McCarty; materials from the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), the National Association of Educational Broadcasters (NAEB), the Office of War Information (OWI), and the State Radio Council (SRC); various publications and reports on educational radio and television; legislative materials; and materials related to Engels, Dreyfus, and Kaltenborn, among other mass communications personalities.
