The BIOGRAPHICAL series includes material about Malcolm and Haynes Johnson's personal lives, as well as general correspondence files, which are both professional and personal, and some publicity for each man as a journalist. This series also includes photographs of both men. Material is arranged in chronological order.
The JOURNALISM series includes newspaper articles written by both Malcolm and Haynes Johnson. Both men wrote series articles, which are arranged chronologically, while standalone articles are organized by decade. The series also includes contracts, business correspondence, and some notes on their tenures as newspaper journalists. Documentation is sizeable for Malcolm Johnson's Pulitzer Prize-winning series “Crimes on the Waterfront,” but less so for Haynes Johnson's Pulitzer Prize-winning series on Selma, Alabama.
The TEACHING series includes material on Haynes Johnson's appointments as a professor, as well as discrete lectures and symposia given by him.
The BOOKS series contains material related to Haynes Johnson's books. This is often a combination of reviews and publicity, drafts of chapters, and some research material. Material is arranged chronologically by the book publication date.
The TRANSCRIPTS series includes transcriptions of interviews Johnson conducted for his books. Many of these transcriptions are for audio recordings also included in the collection, and are so noted in the contents list. Material is arranged alphabetically by interviewee, and interviewee's names are indexed by folder.
The AUDIO RECORDINGS series contains interviews collected by Haynes Johnson for the writing of Bay of Pigs, Divided We Fall, and The System, as well as recordings of radio show appearances by him. Some of these interviews have also been transcribed; there are also notes for interview transcriptions. Material is arranged by format and then mostly alphabetically.
The VIDEORECORDINGS series contains recordings of television appearances and specials in which Haynes Johnson participated, as well as a DVD copy of his memorial service. Material is arranged by format and then mostly alphabetically.
