Scope and Content Note

Reports, other publications, and state university extension fact sheets, 1961-1983, related to organic and sustainable agriculture from the collection of George Kuepper, Horticulture Manager at the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture.

Reports from the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems (CBNS), at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, 1975-1979, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Program of Research Applied to National Needs (RANN) grants, compare conventional vs. organic agriculture, as well as studies of energy and irrigation issues. Also included is a Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) report on organic farming and a critique of a draft of that report, written by Georgia [Shearer?]; a Center for Rural Affairs report on barriers small farms face in adopting more ecological practices; a report on materials for soil enrichment; and reports from the Rodale Press Cornucopia Project, a study of the American food system.

Other publications include a sustainable agriculture resource guide; three publications from the Southwest Project of the Meals for Millions/Freedom from Hunger Foundation, concerning desert agriculture and foraging, notably among the Tohono O'odham and Akimel O'Otham peoples, circa 1980s; various article reprints and excerpts, including Ernest Halbleib's faith-based appeal for organic farming practices; and publications on aspects of organic farming.

University extension fact sheets, 1971-circa 1980s, include early advice on organic gardening and farming from several state university extension services.
