Pratt, Hadley, and Pierce Family Papers, 1847-1966, 2005

Scope and Content Note

The Pratt family materials include letters to Betsy Pratt from her children and letters between siblings discussing Indian treaties, the Civil War, and family activities. The Hadley family materials relate to the children of Emma Dowse Hadley and Herbert Hadley and include photographs documenting Ella Josephine “Jo” Hadley’s student life at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1914-1918), her teaching position at Antigo High School (1918-1920), and her family and their farm (1910, circa 1918). Other family materials include correspondence to Beulah (Hadley) Paulson (1914-1945), her journal and school papers (1910, 1914-1919), postcards (bulk 1914-1918), and teaching contracts (1923, 1935). There are a few letters to Edith Hadley regarding her teaching career at several black colleges including some photographs, an Evansville High School graduation edition of “True Blue” with works by Edith and Jo Hadley (1909), and a diary belonging to Susan Hadley (1909-1910). Materials relating to the Pierce family include letters and postcards to H.L. “Leaver” Pierce from his parents, George and Mary, while attending the University of Wisconsin and at Spring Brook Farm (1911-1914, 1916-1918), letters to Jo Hadley from Leaver Pierce during World War I while they were courting (1917-1920), a honeymoon scrapbook put together by Jo (Hadley) Pierce (1920) and a New Year’s Eve Journal kept by Leaver (1917-1967). Additionally, there are letters from their sons, Richard and Peter Pierce, while serving in the United States Navy during World War II (1943-1948).
