Madison Business College Records, 1882-1999

Biography/History

Madison Business College was originally founded as Northwestern Business College in 1856 by R.S. Bacon. The college initially served as a preparatory institution for the University of Wisconsin offering both business and academic subjects, but by 1859 the college had shifted its focus to training young men and women for careers in business. The college changed its name to Capitol City Commercial College (4C) in 1903 and in 1922 to the Madison Business College (MBC). In 1991 the name was changed yet again to the Madison Junior College of Business but shortly before the school closed in 1998 it reverted back to MBC.
