La Crosse Labor Temple Association Records, 1921-1983

Scope and Content Note

The records consist of four series: ADMINISTRATIVE, A.F.L. CLUB, BUILDING FACILITIES, and FINANCIAL.

The ADMINISTRATIVE series, 1921-1983, does not provide a complete overview of the administration of the association although the meeting minutes are nearly complete. There is very little correspondence and records contained within the administrative file are scattered in date. The series does contain early records detailing individual stockholders and member unions, and lists identifying Board officers throughout much of the association's history. There is also a 1959 publication of the La Crosse A.F.L.-C.I.O. Council which contains some information about the association. Scattered records (1925-1927) relate to building social activities.

A.F.L. CLUB records, 1950-1977, concern a tavern operated within the labor temple building by a bar manager who was accountable to the Board of Directors. These records include documents, 1950-1977, which identify recurrent problems in bar operation, finances, and management; and inventories of liquor stock for 1973 and 1974. Researchers are also referred to the FINANCIAL series for additional information on the A.F.L. Club.

BUILDING FACILITIES, 1932-1979, include documents relating to both the King Street and Ward Avenue buildings including blueprints, property appraisals, and documents relating to needed building repairs and changes for the King Street facility; and a building specifications book, 1979, for the Ward Street building. Also included are facility rental books, 1966-1974, and papers, 1943-1972, which provide information about building use by local unions as well as rental charges and use policies.

FINANCIAL, 1929-1982, includes fairly complete annual, monthly, and quarterly financial reports detailing receipts and disbursements for both the association and the A.F.L. Club for the period 1929 to 1982. There are also income tax reports between 1933 and 1969.
