Gale College Records, 1919-1922, 1929-1940

Scope and Content Note

The papers in the collection primarily pertain to the school's financial operations. In the two folders of correspondence, most of the letters were written by the financial secretary and concern the 1919-1920 Tri-Academy Endowment Drive conducted by the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Drive officials hoped to raise one hundred fifty thousand dollars to be divided among three Lutheran colleges - Gale, Scandinavia Academy, and Pleasant View College. Endowment fund records contain promissory notes given to the school, and correspondence regarding the collection of notes and debts. The financial and operating statements file is fragmentary. Student and college accounts reveal Gale College's internal financial operation. The file of invoices, mainly from book dealers, give the titles of books and music provided for students, and in this way indicate the subjects and courses taught at Gale. Also included are correspondence and lists of members of the Gale College Advancement Club, which was organized to financially support the college, and Christian education in general, via membership dues and solicited contributions. The account book also contains Club records, 1931-1939, giving members' names and addresses, and date joined. Also found in the account book are college expenditures and receipts, and a record of student accounts with the college. Folder 10 contains Arthur F. Giere's typewritten history of the institution, written in 1940.
