Wisconsin. Circuit Court (Jackson County): Naturalization Records, 1853-1963

Scope and Content Note

There are two index volumes for the Jackson County Naturalization Records. Index to Declarations, Petitions and Certificates, 1853-1941, (Volume 1) is a typewritten version of Index of Declarations, Petitions, and Certificates, 1852-1935 (Volume 2).

Volume 1 is arranged in alphabetical segments by first letter of surname and more or less chronological therein. It gives the date only for Declarations filed in 1853-1871; these Declarations are not included in this collection. For Declarations filed in 1871-1941, it gives the date, volume and page or Declaration number. It refers to the second volume of Declarations (1884-1899) as both Volume “2” and Volume “B” and that is why that volume is shown in the Contents List below as Volume “2/B.” For Certificates of Naturalization and Petitions, it gives the date, volume and page, or Petition number. It indexes only those Declarations filed prior to April 1941 (that is Volumes 1, 2/B, C, 1, 2, 3) and their corresponding Certificates and Petitions. For later Declarations and Petitions (that is Volume 4 of Declarations, and Petitions in Volume 9 and part of Volume 8), the researcher should use the indexes located at the front of these volumes.

The other index, Volume 2, is a handwritten version of Volume 1 and it indexes Declarations only through number 407 in Volume 3 and their corresponding Certificates and Petitions. It should be only used as a backup to the typed index in case an error was made in transcribing from one volume to the other.

Some volumes have been dismantled for preservation purposes and placed in Box 1. The Contents List below gives the Box and Folder number for location purposes, but also gives the volume number since that is what the index references.

All of these records are also available on microfilm. Duplication of records on several microfilm reels occurred when the Genealogical Society of Utah filmed the same records at two different times and in different locations. Reels 1 and 4 are exact duplicates and contain indexes and Declarations of Intentions. For the location of the other records on microfilm, consult the Contents List below for the reel number.

Records missing from this series (Declarations, 1853-1879, and Certificates, 1853-1867) may have been lost during the move to the new courthouse in 1878.

Note

The volumes were renumbered. The old numbers follow in square brackets.
