Abstract:
Papers of Charles Burmeister of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and Frankfort, Michigan, containing: memoranda concerning the history of the merchant marine of the Great Lakes, particularly Lake Michigan; correspondence, 1879-1880, of Hannah, Lay & Company, a Traverse City, Michigan, lumber firm; diaries, 1864-1891; reminiscences of life in Door County, Wisconsin; an Ottawa Indian trade vocabulary; an autobiography of his brother, Byron Burmeister; and photographs. The photographs include an album with cyanotype images made by Charles Burmeister including views of Frankfort, Michigan, the harbor and shoreline, winter scenes, boats, a lifesaving station, shipping operations, family outings, a Methodist church camp, and an Indian camp; another album consists of portraits of Charles Burmeister and his family; and the loose photographs contain similar images of Frankfort found in the first album, 1879-1890, and two portraits of Burmeister. Also includes a black cut-out silhouette of Burmeister, 1879, some clipped advertisements for his grocery store, and a 1959 film based on Burmeister’s accounts of shipping accidents off of Frankfort from 1878 to 1886.
