Manitowoc Coordinating Committee Records, 1938-1941

Scope and Content Note

The Records of the Manitowoc Coordinating Committee, 1938-1941, consist of correspondence, affidavits, financial materials, and minutes of the MCC. There are also fragmentary records of the WCC and National Coordinating Committee, consisting of minutes of both organizations and of the WCC constitution. The entire collection is also available in microfilm.

The largest part of the MCC records is correspondence between Nathan Schneck and Ben Z. Glass and the office of the National Coordinating Committee. These letters refer mostly to attempts to settle particular refugees in Manitowoc, but they also deal with general policy matters, such as how money could be raised, the procedures for securing affidavits, and the coordinating of resettlement efforts.

The MCC financial records, although incomplete, include receipts, a bank statement, and a list of contributors and their contributions. The local committee sent 200 dollars a year to the state committee as well as raising funds to help the immigrants newly arrived in Manitowoc.

The constitution of the WCC and minutes of both the WCC and NCC are incomplete. They are valuable, nonetheless, for information about the financial and organizational structures of the hierarchy of coordinating committees. Also included are lists of WCC and NCC members and the names of participants at meetings and conferences.
