Draper Manuscripts: William Preston Papers, 1731-1791

Scope and Content Note

Business records deal with Preston's land dealings; frontier development in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia; and his dealings with John Buchanan and James Patton, including surveys done by Buchanan. Military records deal with Dunmore's Expedition (1774), the Revolutionary War, Battle of King's Mountain, Battle of Point Pleasant, and later the protection of the borders from the Indians. Included are correspondence, memos, provision lists, muster rolls, commissions, and receipt books. Papers dealing with the Indians include documents from Preston's involvement in negotiations with the Cherokee and Shawnee tribes, correspondence, and speeches.
