Series: Series 1: Kellar Personal , (1817-1961)
Scope and Content Note

Kellar's personal papers are sub-divided into 6 sub-categories:

  • 1.1 personal correspondence (1898-1962; n.d.);
  • 1.2 Kellar family (1817-1961);
  • 1.3 autobiographical potpourri (1905-1969);
  • 1.4 financial records (1911-1952);
  • 1.5 education and teaching career (1899-1916); and
  • 1.6 writings and speeches (1903-1955).

Personal correspondence (1.1) is again divided. There is a general correspondence file arranged chronologically from 1898 to 1962. (There is no correspondence for the years 1899 through 1906; and there are some letters for which a date could not be ascertained.) In 1947 Kellar was awarded an LL.D. by Augustana College and Theological Seminary, Rock Island, Illinois. The correspondence (1947-1949) relating to this honor is in chronological order and filed separately in subseries 1.1.

The Kellar family file (1.2), containing the papers preserved by Kellar of his immediate family, has been arranged by family member in order of seniority, and chronologically by type of record thereunder. The first folder of the series contains whatever genealogical and family history records remain. Following this are the papers of the Reverend Mr. Isaac Kellar (1817-1843); of George Kellar, Sr., Herbert Kellar's father (1889-1893); of Mary Elizabeth Summers Kellar, H.A.K.'s mother (1876-1940); of (George) Gordon Kellar, H.A.K.'s brother (1908-1925); of Henry, June, and Steven Grimes, the family of H.A.K.'s sister June (1908-1951); of Dorothy Alderton Kellar, H.A.K.'s first wife (1906-1949); of Lucile E. O'Connor Kellar, H.A.K.'s second wife and widow (1921-1961); and of Alecea Summers Kellar Beckley, H.A.K.'s daughter and only child (1943-1951).

Isaac Kellar's papers include sermons (1818-1832); a record of baptisms and marriages in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (1820-1843); and student notebooks he kept at Princeton Seminary (1817; n.d.). The papers of George Kellar, Sr., his wife, Mary Summers Kellar, and their children, Gordon and June are not distinguishable from most family correspondence of the period. Gordon, a promising architect, was killed in a flight training accident at Kelley Field, Texas during World War I. The papers of Dorothy Alderton Kellar are among the most poignant of the collection, and are remarkable for the insight into the personality and aspirations of the young Kellar; student life at the University of Wisconsin (1911-1913); and the life of an intelligent and tragic woman reminiscent of Zelda Fitzgerald. Dorothy Kellar's life is documented from girlhood until her death from cancer in 1942. Also documented in the Kellar family file are Lucile O'Connor Kellar's years of dedication to her husband, to the McCormick Historical Association, and to her family (including a brother, Kenneth O'Connor, later (8 March 1965 - 30 June 1972) director of the Dane County Chapter of the American National Red Cross). There are a few childhood letters, cards, drawings, and records of H.A.K.'s daughter Alecea. In sum, it is a quite complete, unbroken record of a family.

The autobiographical potpourri (1.3) is a small file containing mainly, drafts of Kellar's releases to such publications as Who's Who in America; and fraternity and alumni materials (1905-1969).

Financial records (1.4) is a two-archive box file of Kellar's financial affairs. It is arranged in an alphabetical subject sequence, and chronologically thereunder from automobile expenses through bank loans, income tax, insurance, invoices and receipts, and real estate transactions.

The section containing the materials on Kellar's education and teaching career (1.5) is arranged in the order of schools attended by Kellar, or at which he taught: Sunday School at the First Presbyterian Church of Peoria, Illinois (1899-1900); Bradley Polytechnic Institute, Peoria, Illinois (1905-1906); the University of Chicago (1909); Manzanita Hall, Palo Alto, California (1909-1911); the University of Wisconsin (1911-1913); the University of Texas (1913-1914); Leland Stanford, Jr. University, and the University of Minnesota (1914-1915). Included herein are lecture notes for mediaeval history (Dana Munro and George Clark Sellery), exam questions for the Ph.D in history (1912), reading lists, syllabi, student lists and records, et cetera.

Writings and speeches (1.6) comprises 8 boxes of material including all Kellar's extant plays, articles, speeches, lectures, books, and drafts of the above. Kellar wrote prize-winning plays at the undergraduate level, lectured and presented papers at professional meetings, and had a few articles published. He was editor of the two-volume work, Solon Robinson, Pioneer and Agriculturist, contributed to the Dictionary of American Biography and several professional journals, but he did not complete either of the two books he determined early in his career to write: a history of agriculture, and “The Life and Times of Mr. Cyrus Hall McCormick.” What he did complete of the latter is filed here (box 16, folder 1; box 16, volumes 22-24).

Series: Series 2: McCormick Historical Association , (1533-1960)
Scope and Content Note

Nearly half of the collection is a part of the McCormick Historical Association file (series 2). These records are Kellar's personal copies. Much is probably duplication of documents found in McCormick Collection manuscripts, e.g. the McCormick Historical Association's official records.

General correspondence of the McCormick Historical Association in the Kellar papers (2.1) is filed in a strict chronological sequence (1911-1960). However, for August 1948 there is a separate folder of correspondence with the J.I. Case Company of Racine, Wisconsin.

The (1916-1955) reports and dockets file (2.2) consists of Kellar's copies of monthly reports to (or dockets of the meetings of) the members of the McCormick family (Cyrus Hall, Jr., Anita McCormick Blaine; Harold F.) or their representatives (Cyrus Bentley and others) to whom Kellar was responsible as director of the McCormick Historical Association. The arrangement is chronological throughout.

Kellar's copies of the financial records of the Association (2.3) are filed here in chronological order (1916-1956). They include moving and storage expenses of the transition period immediately preceding transfer of the McCormick Collections to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.

Sub-series (2.4) entitled “general information re collections, and operation of the Association” (1855-1969) includes operational materials e.g. information about the collections, lists of holdings, lists of materials loaned, bibliographies, et cetera. There is information re the Dicke Collection of Chicagoana, which the McCormicks considered acquiring, and re the Davidson Collection of Virginiana, which they did purchase. There are copies of old documents filed under research and reference; collected materials re McCormick family genealogy, biography, and memorials. Correspondence, reports, scripts, notes and clippings referring to films, radio programs, centennial celebrations, and Agricultural Hall of Fame awards are filed here. In the 1940's the “future of the (McCormick) library” became of foremost importance with the demoliton of the building in which the library was housed. Correspondence, reports, meeting agenda, and materials concerning possible locations for the library can be found in this sub-series.

Papers filed under sub-series (2.5) Virginia collections (1809-1961) include correspondence regarding the acquisition of Virginiana, Americana, McCormick manuscripts, and stamps for the McCormick library. There are also some typewritten copies of documents concerning William Massie of Rockbridge County, Virginia, a friend of Robert and Cyrus Hall McCormick; and of the Tye River and Blue Ridge Turnpike Company; and from the James Dorman Davidson papers, which are part of the McCormick Collections. With the Davidson materials in Kellar's papers are the results of research in the Davidson papers, on nineteenth-century social history, done in 1938 and 1939 by Arthur Stocks.

The most significant and largest group of materials in this sub-section of the papers is filed as “research and reference” (2.6). A wide range of dates is covered here (1533-1957), with the majority of the materials falling in the nineteenth-century. Included is a listing by Kellar's catalogue number of bibliographic references to Cyrus Hall McCormick and the reaper, as follows:

  • AP - agricultural periodicals
  • AS - agricultural societies
  • AG - agricultural patents
  • AM - agricultural encyclopedias
  • BB - biographical materials
  • BG - genealogical materials
  • HA - agricultural history
  • HL - local history
  • HM - general history
  • RP - religious periodicals
  • RM - religious materials
  • MS - mechanical societies
  • MM - mechanical dictionaries
  • MP - mechanical periodicals
  • ME - exposition reports
  • MC - catalogue materials
  • MG - patent records
  • ML - legal records
  • UP - newspapers
  • UM - miscellaneous
  • GP - general periodicals

There is also a chronologically arranged listing of the agricultural periodical (AP) references; and an alphabetical listing of “non-McCormick references - periodical classification.” Also preserved here are typewritten copies of the materials referred to in the bibliographic references; and newspaper references to Cyrus Hall McCormick copied in manuscript form by Charles O'Connor (a brother of Lucile O'Connor Kellar's) from Chicago newspapers of the latter half of the ninetenneth-century. The reaper controversy research materials are arranged chronologically. They deal with the various reaper patent cases with which Cyrus Hall McCormick was involved. The dispute over the invention of the reaper includes materials from the Robert vs. Cyrus Hall McCormick controversy, Hussey vs. McCormick, Seymour and Morgan vs. McCormick, Manny vs. McCormick, the McCormick Patent Extension Cases of 1848, 1859, and 1861, as well as various other rivals and controversies. Also found here are materials referring to the awards, exhibitions, and contests both foreign and domestic) involving reapers; editorial comment relating to reapers; the bound photo-engraved reprint of the 1885 pamphlet, Memorial of Robert McCormick...Including the Early History of the McCormick Reaper; and the published pamphlet, The Life and Works of Robert McCormick Including the Invention of the Reaper by Robert Hall McCormick and James Hall Shields. Also included here are galley proof and page proof of The Invention of the McCormick Reaper (unpublished) by Cyrus Bentley.

Scope and Content Note

Of special interest in the Herbert A. Kellar Papers is the correspondence with historians, archivists, librarians, and agriculturists, filed under the headings of the various historical and library associations or the clubs of which Kellar was a member. (Note: Personal correspondence with historians, librarians, archivists, and agriculturists will be found in series 5: Historians and Agriculturists.)

These materials are varied as to quantity and quality, but in general they include correspondence, information in regard to programs and meetings, papers read, publications, committee reports, and Kellar's notes on these various functions of the organizations. As Kellar was a charter member, and often a founder of some of these groups, organizational information, rivalries among the groups, constitutional and membership data is informative. These are not official records, although there are some copies of official records, proceedings, and other publications of the various societies.

The historical associations (3.1) are arranged alphabetically. They include the Agricultural History Society (1919-1958); the Society of American Archivists (1934-1957); the American Association for State and Local History (1929-1954); the American Council of Learned Societies (1927-1956); the American Historical Association (1914-1953); the Business Historical Society (1930-1950); the Economic History Association (1940-1952); the Industrial History Society (1939-1940); the Conference of Historical Agency Executives (Midwest Historical Conference) (1935-1937); the Mississippi Valley Historical Association (Organization of American Historians) (1916-1957); the National Archives (1932-1953); and the Southern Historical Association (1935-1952). The subject files for the individual associations or organizations are chronologically ordered.

There is some material for over thirty other historically oriented organizations, committees, and conferences (3.2). This file is arranged alphabetically by name of organization, committee, club, or conference; and chronologically thereunder.

The library associations file (3.3) incorporates Kellar's collected materials pertaining to the American Library Association (1915 - [1934-1948]); the Association of College and Reference Libraries (1942-1948); the Special Libraries Association (1930-1949); the Experimental Division of Library Cooperation, the Library of Congress, of which Kellar was director in 1941-1942 (1896; 1902 - [1929-1962]); the Agricultural Library of the United States Department of Agriculture (1933); the Baker Library, Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University (1938-1951); the Chicago Metropolitan Library Council (1941-1946); Clements Library, University of Michigan (c. 1925-1946); the Council of Library Associations (1941-1942); the Huntington Library, San Marino, California (1948); the Illinois Library Association (1938-1948); the Illinois State Library (1947-1957); among others. The file is an alphabetical one; with a chronological treatment of the papers under each of the individual associations.

(Who's Who in America, 1952-1953). Everett Eugene Edwards died in May 1952.

Scope and Content Note

The Everett Eugene Edwards papers are a compilation of the correspondence (1929-1952), notes, references, articles, agricultural materials, reports, and miscellany sent to Herbert A. Kellar by Edwards during his lifetime; Edwards' own alphabetical and chronological files of correspondence (1911-1950); and the research notes of Lewis Cecil Gray. The latter two groups of materials were given to Kellar by Mrs. E.E. (Helen Heckler) Edwards following her husband's death in May 1952.

The Edwards' papers from Kellar's personal library (7.1); and Edwards' own files of chronologically (7.2) and alphabetically (7.3) organized correspondence relate directly to Edwards or his professional activities, either in his capacity as an agricultural historian with the United States Department of Agriculture, or as editor of Agricultural History. This material is quite comprehensive.

Sub-series 7.4, the research notes of Lewis Cecil Gray for his History of Agriculture in the Southern United States to 1860, apparently came into Edwards' possession following Gray's death. The notes are written on 5×8 sheets, and are filed alphabetically in four separate chronological groupings: 1837-1844; 1845-1854; 1855-1864; and 1860-1870, and followed by "Notes (listed by author)". They cover nearly every aspect and variable touching upon agriculture in the South (except the weather!).

Series: Series 8: Solon Robinson (1803-1880), Papers, 1836-1880; 1908-1939
Biography/History: Solon Robinson, son of Jacob Robinson and Salinda Ladd Robinson, was born at Tolland, Connecticut on 21 October 1803, a descendant of the Reverend John Robinson, one of the leaders (and pastor) of the Separatists from the Church of England in the early 1600's, who immigrated to Leyden, Netherlands and later Plymouth Colony. Orphaned at ten, with a meager education, Solon Robinson was a carpenter's apprentice at fourteen, and a Yankee peddler at eighteen. In 1828, after an abortive real estate venture in Indiana, he opened a general store in Lake County, Indiana, trading with Pottawatomie Indians, and settlers. In 1836, he formed a Squatter's Union there. By 1837, under the by-line “Solon Robinson of Indiana,” he began contributing articles to the Albany Cultivator and other agricultural periodicals. In 1852, the United States Agricultural Society was founded after ten years of effort on Robinson's part. This, in turn, influenced the establishment of the United States Department of Agriculture in 1862. From 1842 to 1852, Robinson toured the states of the Mississippi Valley, the South, and the East, reporting his observations in the Cultivator, the American Agriculturist, and the Prairie Farmer, among others. In 1852, Robinson published an agricultural periodical, The Plow, and at Horace Greeley's behest became agricultural editor of the New York Tribune in 1853. Due to ill health, Robinson moved to Florida about 1868. There he founded the Florida Republican and continued to write until his death in 1880.
Scope and Content Note: The Solon Robinson papers are an artificial collection brought together by Kellar in preparation for the two-volume, Solon Robinson, Pioneer and Agriculturist, which he edited in 1936. They include copies of Robinson's writings (1836-1880), and notes, sketches, statements, articles, and correspondence, either biographical or pertaining to the publication of Robinson's writings, from the research period (1929-1936) and after to 1939.
