Wisconsin. Circuit Court (Dane County): Divorce Case Files, 1839-1928

Scope and Content Note

This series was created by identifying cases that were probably divorce cases in Dane Series 109, “Circuit Court Civil Case Files,” and removing, and microfilming them. These divorce cases form Dane Series 314. Cases were selected if the last name of both the plaintiff and defendant were the same, or if the case type was clearly identified as a divorce. Therefore, the series may include some non-divorce cases such as monetary disputes involving members of the same family. Occasionally there may be more than one case for the same two parties. Although the cases came to the State Historical Society in the Circuit Court records, some cases were adjudicated in the Municipal or Superior court. The court of record is indicated on the case file jacket. The original files were discarded after filming.

Note that cases were filmed in item number order. The item number on the file folder identifies each case. If an individual used an alias, an entry was made for each alias as well as the name on record. The presence of an alias is indicated by an asterisk (*) following the item number in question.
