Columbia County (Wis.). Register of Deeds: Grantor/Grantee Indexes, 1828-1926

Scope and Content Note

Indexes are divided into two broad categories: original handwritten indexes, 1846-1902 (reels 12-18), and typewritten transcriptions of those indexes, 1828-1926 (reels 1-11). Original Indexes are further sub-divided by Grantees, 1846-1901 (reels 12-15) and Grantors, 1854-1902 (reels 15-18). Note that deeds were not indexed by grantors until 1854. Transcribed Indexes are further sub-divided by time ranges (1828-1886 and 1887-1926) and thereunder by grantor/grantee. For the time period 1828-1886 there is one set of grantee indexes, 1828-1886 (reels 1-3) and two sets of grantor indexes, 1828-1866 (reels 6-7) and 1867-1886 (reels 8-9). For the time period 1887-1926 there is one set of grantee indexes, 1887-1926 (reels 3-6) and one set of grantor indexes, 1887-1906 (reels 9-11).

Researchers may want to begin by using the transcribed indexes because they cover a wider time span and are easier to read. Be aware that there is no guarantee that all entries were transcribed nor transcribed accurately. If you do not find the entry you are looking for, use the original indexes.
