Wisconsin. Governor (1979-1983: Dreyfus): Speeches and Addresses of Governor Lee Sherman Dreyfus, 1979-1982

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of 152 cassette tapes arranged in chronological order and includes recording notes for some of the tapes (missing as of August 5, 2010). Not all of Dreyfus' speeches were recorded. Of those that were, some were lost before the collection was presented to the Wisconsin Historical Society. During the processing of this collection, Dreyfus Policy Advisor Paul Swain was contacted and asked to rate each tape in terms of its importance as a policy statement as well as its probable future value as documentation of the Dreyfus administration. Swain ranked the tapes in five groups of descending importance. All of the tapes in the first two groups (the As and Bs) were mastered and abstracted.

There are three incomplete indexes for the Dreyfus speeches:

Indexes

  1. Recording notes for 51 of the 152 tapes have been found. These notes are arranged chronologically and give some idea of the content of each speech, but are by their nature sketchy. (Missing as of August 5, 2010.)
  2. Six speeches were indexed by the Governor's staff along with his press conferences. (Series 2104 is missing as of 08/05/2010.)
  3. 34 speeches ranked as significant by Paul Swain were abstracted during mastering by State Historical Society of Wisconsin staff. These abstracts list the major topics of each speech in the order in which they were covered.
