The American Proctologic Society was founded on June 7, 1899 in Columbus, Ohio. The
American Board of Proctology changed to the American Board of Colon and Rectal
Surgeons on September 16, 1960. After years of deliberation, The American
Proctologic Society made their final name change to The American Society of Colon
and Rectal Surgeons. The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research
Foundation received its tax exempt status on October 31, 1962. In 1996 there was a
merging of the two organizations and the research foundation began operating as an
affiliate of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons but continues to
function autonomously.
