The Ben Sidran Collection is stored in 194 archival boxes, 4 photographic slide albums and
1 oversize audiotape reel. It is divided into twelve series covering books and articles,
project files, business records, press clippings, sheet music, photographs, artwork and
posters, audio recordings, video recordings, computer files, Sidran Family papers, and
restricted files.
Series I contains copies of books and journal articles written by Ben Sidran.
Series II contains paper records for various music, writing and research projects. These
are divided into sub-series covering writings, music recordings by Ben Sidran, music
recordings by other musicians and produced by Ben Sidran, radio programs, video and
television recordings, soundtracks, concerts and tours, organization records and university
courses.
Series III contains paper business records related to Ben Sidran's career. Sub-series cover
general correspondence, resumes and business cards, De Capo Press (publisher of "Black
Talk"), Bulldog Productions, the Go Jazz Records label, and work calendars, diaries and
schedules.
Series IV contains newspaper and journal press clippings related to Ben Sidran's
career.
Series V contains published and handwritten sheet music and scores by Ben Sidran and other
musicians.
Series VI contains photographs, photographic negatives and slides of Ben Sidran and other
musicians.
Series VII contains concert posters, flyers, and original album cover artwork.
Series VIII contains audio recordings. Sub-series cover commercially released albums and
singles, production recordings, live and radio concerts, interviews of jazz musicians and
producers by Ben Sidran, commercials and promotions, talks and lectures, radio shows
presented by Ben Sidran, and radio appearances by Ben Sidran. Formats include audiotape
reels, vinyl LPs and singles, audio cassettes, 8-Track cartridges, CDs, DATs, MiniDiscs,
Digital 8 cassettes and DA-8 cassettes.
Series IX contains video recordings. Sub-series cover commercially released video
recordings, production recordings, live and television concerts, interviews of jazz
musicians and producers by Ben Sidran, commercials and promotions, talks and lectures,
television shows presented by Ben Sidran, and television appearances by Ben Sidran. Formats
include videotape reels, U-Matic video cassettes, Betacam video cassettes, D-2 video
cassettes, VHS cassettes, DVDs, DVCAM video cassettes, MiniDV video cassettes and
LaserDiscs.
Series X contains computer files stored on physical media. Sub-series cover digital
photographs, album artwork, text files and electronic music files. Formats include floppy
discs, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMS and Zip Disks.
Series XI contains personal papers, photographs and audiovisual recordings related to the
Sidran Family. Access is restricted.
Series XII contains other restricted paper files. Access is restricted.
The collection is an exhaustive account of Ben Sidran's 50+ year career as a musician,
researcher of the history of Jazz and Jewish music, writer, lecturer, music producer,
television and radio presenter, and interviewer of Jazz and popular musicians.
