Barbara J. Howe received her B.A. in history and her B.S. in education from the University
of Cincinnati and her M.A. in history from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee in 1971.
During her time at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, Howe was involved in the anti-war
movement. After attaining a Ph.D. in American and English history from Temple University,
she became a visiting assistant professor of history at West Virginia University and then
Howe served as the "Interim Director" of the Center for Women's Studies. In 2000, she was
named permanent director of the Center. Howe has also authored various publications in the
field women's studies (Historical Hall of Fame: Barbara J. Howe, Virginia History
Series.org).
