Bruce Fetter has taught history at UWM since receiving his Ph.D. in 1968. His research and
teaching interests largely focus on health care in world history, historical demography,
Africa, and cartography. In a post on the Columbia University website, he described himself
as a "social historian of colonial Africa, with a specialization in Central and Southern
Africa." During the 1970s and 1980s, Fetter served on the boards of a number of local
community organizations, including AWARE (A Wisconsin African Relief Effort), the East Side
Ecumenical Council, and the Milwaukee Chapter of the American Jewish Committee, and also
served as president of Congregation Anshe Sfard.
