Sanford Towart Scrapbooks, 1983-1999

Scope and Content Note

The scrapbooks include clippings from local newspapers and national serial publications documenting the major social issues involving homosexuality throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Most of the early volumes focus almost exclusively on HIV/AIDS, which is a theme throughout all nine volumes. Generally, these are clippings from local papers on national news stories, but some clippings pertain to Milwaukee. Other volumes include clippings about gays and religion, gays in the military, and same-sex marriage. Documentation concerning the Jeffrey Dahmer serial killings occupies most of volume 8.

Most of the clippings in these scrapbooks are from local newspapers including the Milwaukee Journal, the Milwaukee Sentinel, and The Wisconsin Light. Additional clippings come from serial publications such as The Advocate, JAMA, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, and The Episcopalian.
