Jerry Johnson Collection of Wisconsin Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Ephemera, 1978-2006

Scope and Content Note

Collection consists of ephemera collected by Jerry Johnson from various bars and clubs, businesses, and organizations from the late 1970s to 2006. The collection provides broad and uneven documentation of Wisconsin gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender life and culture. Most of the material comes from the Milwaukee area, although the scope of the collection is statewide. Gay male and lesbian organizations are better represented than those of bisexuals and transgender individuals. Within these parameters, topical strengths include AIDS/HIV, leather bars, the Mr. and Miss Wisconsin Pageants, the establishment of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, and early Pride celebrations and parades in Milwaukee. Typically, files include organizational newsletters, brochures, flyers, and postcard mailers.
